Every bottle of expressed milk holds hours of your love and effort. Warming it gently is the last small kindness before the feed.

The good news: you can warm breast milk in a portable warmer, and the rules are the same ones you already follow at home.

Is it safe to warm breast milk in a portable warmer?

Yes. What protects breast milk is control: knowing the temperature it will reach before you start.

A pan on the stove keeps heating while you settle a crying baby. A warmer with fixed settings gives you a known finish line instead.

On the Stenviax Bottle Warmer Pro you press the milk button, choose 92, 95 or 98 °F, and it beeps twice when the milk gets there. The milk warms in the 17 oz / 500 ml chamber of food-grade 316L stainless steel, then pours into whichever bottle your baby takes.

A cordless warmer changes where you warm, not how. The milk cannot tell whether the heat came from a wall socket or a battery.

Why not warm breast milk in a microwave?

The CDC is clear on this one: never thaw or heat breast milk in a microwave. It can destroy nutrients and create hot spots that burn a baby's mouth.

A fixed setting avoids both. You choose the temperature, and the warmer stops there.

What temperature should breast milk be warmed to?

The Stenviax Pro's user manual sets 98 °F as the highest temperature to use for breast milk, and the milk button stops there. The four water settings, 98 to 122 °F, sit under their own button.

98 °F is close to body temperature, which is why so many parents choose it. Measured from refrigerator temperature at a full charge, the Stenviax Pro warms 4 oz of breast milk to 98 °F in about 70 seconds.

92 and 95 °F suit babies who happily take a cooler bottle. Pick one setting and keep it, so there is one less decision at 3 a.m.

How long is warmed breast milk good for?

Once breast milk is warmed, the CDC says to use it within 2 hours. If your baby does not finish the bottle, the leftover milk follows the same 2-hour rule and is then thrown away.

Never refreeze breast milk after it has thawed. Milk thawed in the refrigerator should be used within 24 hours.

So warm one feed at a time: if your baby usually takes 4 oz, warm 4 oz. For fridge and freezer times, see our breast milk storage guidelines.

How do you warm breast milk in a portable warmer?

  1. Mix the milk

Nutrients in stored milk settle, so give the bottle a gentle shake before the milk goes in.

  2. Pour it into the chamber

Pour in the amount your baby will take. If the chamber is ever empty, the warmer stops and shows E2.

  3. Choose your milk setting

Hold the power button for three seconds, press the milk button and choose 92, 95 or 98 °F. Leave the warmer still while it runs.

  4. Pour and test

It beeps twice when the milk is ready. Pour it into your baby's bottle and test a few drops on your wrist before the feed.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to warm breast milk in a battery-powered warmer?
Yes. Warm it on a fixed setting no higher than 98 °F, the highest milk setting on the Stenviax Pro and the highest temperature its manual says to use for breast milk. The usual storage and timing rules still apply.
How long can warmed breast milk sit out?
Use it within 2 hours. The CDC says warmed breast milk, and milk left over in a bottle your baby did not finish, should be used within 2 hours and then discarded.
Can I refreeze breast milk after it has thawed?
No. The CDC says never to refreeze breast milk after it has thawed. Milk thawed in the refrigerator should be used within 24 hours.
Why shouldn't I use a microwave to warm breast milk?
A microwave can destroy nutrients and create hot spots that burn a baby's mouth, so the CDC says never to use one. A warmer with fixed settings heats to the temperature you choose.
What temperature should I warm breast milk to?
Many parents choose 98 °F, close to body temperature. Some babies take 92 °F or 95 °F just as happily. Whichever you use, test a few drops on your wrist before every feed.
